Description: The upcoming anniversary of the three-century reign of the Romanov dynasty was decided to be celebrated on an unprecedented scale. Two points were put at the forefront - Moscow (the capital during the period of the Romanovs' ascension) and Kostroma (it was there that Mikhail Romanov was called to the throne). And the capital did not stand aside, because preparations for the holiday began there three years before the anniversary. The main day of the celebration was declared to be February 21 (March 6, new style). On this date, solemn prayers were held in a special way in all the churches of Russia, but the most sublime atmosphere was to be created in the Assumption Cathedral (Moscow) and the Kazan Cathedral (St. Petersburg). The liturgy in the latter was led by Patriarch Gregory IV of Antioch, after which the imperial family entered the cathedral. The high society of Russian society gathered at three o'clock in the afternoon in the Nicholas Hall of the Winter Palace. In the evening, the celebration continued with a grand ball, organized by the St. Petersburg nobility. It is worth noting that the celebration of the anniversary reached an international level. The highest ranks of Serbia wished many years to the Russian emperor and the entire royal house at a solemn service, and Belgrade was festively and magnificently decorated for this date. In May, the royal family sets off on a trip around Russia, covering the historical places of the dynasty. It seemed that the celebrations would last forever. For the holiday, they decided to issue a commemorative coin of ruble denomination. As on the usual annual ruble, there is a portrait of the current monarch. However, this is not the usual profile portrait, but rather a full face. In addition, Nicholas II is depicted in the company of Mikhail Fyodorovich, the first of the Romanovs to ascend the Russian throne. The Monomakh Cap and the wide shoulder straps or with sewn-on jewels (barmas) indicate the royal title. Nicholas II is dressed in the uniform of a colonel of the 4th Rifle Imperial Family Life Guards Regiment. The reverse side features the State Emblem, denomination and memorable dates ("1613-1913"). The edge is fully consistent with the annual coin and contains the initials of the mintmaster Viktor Smirnov ("VS"). The ruble is minted from 900-grade silver, weighs 20 grams (including 18 grams of pure metal) and has a diameter of 33.65 mm. The famous medalist Anton Fyodorovich Vasyutinsky worked on the creation of the ruble. Numismatists distinguish two main types of obverse: convex and flat coinage. An expert's trained eye will instantly identify the variant. Beginners should be guided by the description of the differences. The convex coinage has a straight line under the portrait. The flat coinage has a slight bend in this line, and the horizontal component of the cross on the Monomakh's cap is at a slight angle to the vertical. But the main marker is the dotted ornament along the edge. On the convex coinage, its lines are thin and long. On the flat coinage, they are thick and shorter.
