Description: A pamphlet issued by order of King Philip V of Spain concerning Spanish and British grievances in the Americas, detailing the reasons leading to the War of Jenkins’ Ear (1739-1748). The manifesto discusses, among several others, the attacks of 1716 and 1717 perpetrated by the British navy against the garrisons of the Spanish shipwrecks located on the coast of Florida resulting in the sack of four hundred thousand pesos. It details matters concerning Carolina and the recently formed Colony of Georgia. The tract accounts the seizure of a Puerto Rico ship in 1722 and the hanging of 43 of its mariners in Jamaica. It also claims that in 1727 the British tried to persuade the Negros of Havana, Cuba, to revolt against the Spanish in exchange of freedom. The pamphlet bases the Spanish claims on previously signed agreements with Britain, namely the 1670 Treaty of Madrid and the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, calling for several articles to support the arguments, such as article 8 of the latest apparently forbidding the British to navigate on the Spanish seas of the Americas. The manifesto also discusses matters related to slave trade and the 1713 Asiento or Contract. The present work is based on the pamphlet titled Cotejo de la Conducta... printed 1739 in Madrid by Antonio Marin. Rare Portuguese edition not mentioned by Sabin.
