Description: A gorgeous map for the history lover & explorer in your life! From 1794, this rare map by Robert Wilkinson shows a beautiful early view of North America, from Mexico to the Arctic and the Atlantic to Pacific Oceans. It compiles several hugely important voyages that took place over the previous years; Captain Cook's exploration of Alaska & the western coast, as well as Samuel Herne and Alexander Mackenzie's enormous overland expeditions to the Arctic Sea. With the conclusion of the Revolutionary War & the dawn of America officially established, this map reflects the shaping continent around it to the utmost degree of accuracy. It shows various colonial territories, and speculates about an infamous "River of the West" that could lead to the Pacific. Various cities and towns which have been established, like Detroit, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Montreal. It has rudimentary Rocky Mountains, and labels large areas according to the Native American Tribes who would have resided there at the time. This particular engraving was part of Robert Wilkinson's larger collection, General Atlas, which contained maps of the world accurate to the time. These maps would be used for future voyages & explorations of North America for years to come. This one is in VG+ condition, with only some minor discolorations in the margins. It was likely printed in 1793-95 in London. With original folds, perhaps made by 18th century explorers themselves, it has been nicely flattened & is perfect for framing. It measures 12.25 x 10.25 inches (31 x 26cm) with a deckled edge, mainly along the right side. Grab it for your own collection, personal research, or just to own a 230-year-old piece of history!
