Description: 1863 LAYS OF THE SCOTTISH CAVALIERS AND OTHER POEMS W E Aytoun ILLUSTRATED Book 1863 – LAYS OF THE SCOTTISH CAVALIERS AND OTHER POEMS By William Edmondstoune Aytoun Antiquarian ILLUSTRATED Hardback Poetry Book. This has numerous wood-engraved illustrations, headpieces, tailpieces, and vignettes throughout, engraved by Dalziel, Thompson, Thomas, W. J. Linton and others after Joseph Noel Paton and Waller H. Paton. It has all-edge gilt pages, green pastedowns and endpapers and the publisher’s original and stunning red and gilt cloth binding. Published by William Blackwood And Sons, Edinburgh and London, in 1863. The book was originally published in 1849, but this is the first edition illustrated by Paton. Joseph Noel Paton was a Sottish artist born in 1821. Please note that this is an ex-library copy and there is an ink stamp on the front endpaper, which states “English Civil War Library M. Byrd”. "Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and Other Poems" is a collection of poems written by William Edmondstoune Aytoun, a Scottish poet and lawyer, born in 1813. The book was first published in 1849 and gained significant popularity during the Victorian era. The collection is primarily composed of historical ballads that depict various events and figures from Scottish history, particularly those related to the Scottish Cavaliers. The Scottish Cavaliers were a group of royalist supporters who fought for King Charles I during the English Civil War and subsequent conflicts. One of the most famous poems in the collection is "The Execution of Montrose." It tells the story of James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose, who was a prominent Scottish nobleman and military leader during the Civil War. The poem vividly describes Montrose's capture, trial, and execution. This is Aytoun's most famous work and gained him widespread recognition and established his reputation as a poet. There is no Dust Jacket. Beautiful gilt decorations and lettering adorn the boards and the spine, with the words on the boards ‘Nemo me impune lacessit’, which is the motto of Scotland and translates to mean ‘No one provokes me with impunity’. The highly ornate, gilt decorated red cloth bound boards and spine are intact. However, there is bumping and small splits in the cloth to the corners, small splits in the cloth on the spine, fading and discoloration to the cloth, some wear, and light marks. The spine has a gentle lean. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference. Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent for a book of this age. A few of the pages are not uniform in their edging and roughly cut, but this is most likely to do with the construction method when this book was made and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a penknife. There is light foxing, predominantly on the pages towards the start and the rear of the book and there is the occasional small or light mark or light crease to the pages, but besides this, they are in an overall neat and clean state for their age, being over 160 years old. There are no rips to the pages. On the inner edge of 86 and 87 (please see photo) there is a small amount of rubbing. This is only minor and does not obscure the text. As well as the ink stamp afore mentioned on the front endpaper, there is a small bookseller sticker pasted to the back pastedown. However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. Between many pages there is a light or partial crack to the gutter, including between the front pastedown and front free endpaper. A few pages are partially loose to one side of the inner binding, and so still attached within the book. There are no missing pages, and so all 268 pages are present, plus 4 pages listing books published by William Blackwood And Sons. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description. This measures approximately 25.5 cm by 19.5 cm and 3.5 cm wide. It weighs approximately 1,432 grams. Thank you so much for looking.
