Description: Stereoview photograph of the House of Representatives chamber in the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., by Bell & Bro., copyright 1868. The view, entitled The House of Representatives and including a lengthy description, shows the hallowed hall where the democratically elected representatives of the United States have met since before the Civil War. Two U.S. flags hang above the Speaker’s desk—anyone bringing a Confederate flag into the chamber at this date would have been shot on sight, hung, burned, and then drawn and quartered. This is how the House of Representatives looked when President Andrew Johnson was impeached by Congress. Francis H. Bell and his sons worked as photographers in Washington, D.C., in the years just before the Civil War. The stereoview is in good condition with light wear and soiling. Note the light rubbing and bumping at the corners of the card. The photographs exhibit good or better tonal range and show good or better detail. A very nice early Washington DC image!
