1880s CC of NELLIE MAY PUDNEY in VICTORIAN Dress ODD HAT Gloves in CORTLAND NY

Description: Cabinet card photograph (tall version, 4” by just over 8”) of a young woman with an exotic hat, by Silverman of Cortland, N.Y., circa 1880s. The full standing view, identified in ink on the back as Nellie May Pudney, shows a young woman in a Victorian dress posing for her likeness in a photographic studio. She wears an odd saucer shaped, Oriental looking hat that sits on her wild curly hair. Nellie has her arms crossed and a leather glove dangles from her hidden hand (sort of looks like a withered hand!). Her dark, wide open eyes seem a bit creepy too. This is Nellie May Pudney (1866-1947). Though born in Jersey City, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the clothing merchant Harrison Henry Pudney and a native of Sherburne, New York. In 1880, the family was living on Cortland Street. When she married in 1886, Nellie didn’t have to change her name. She and her husband, Thomas H. Pudney (probably a cousin) would move to Rhode Island in later years. Nellie May Pudney died in North Providence, Rhode Island, in 1947. I suspect this image dates to just before the time of her marriage. The cabinet card is in good to very good condition with light wear and soiling. Note the rubbing at the corners of the card. The photograph exhibits good to very good tonal range and shows very good detail. There is some light soiling on the surface of the image, as well as some fingerprints at the edges. The pencil notes on the back are mine. A funky and interesting Victorian portrait image!
