Description: Extremely early and ideal-for-display piece for Eugene Debs dating from 1894. There are very few great display items for Eugene Debs so early. The Illustrated American was a weekly American periodical published from 1890 until 1900 that covered current events and is credited by many as the first photographic weekly news magazine in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Illustrated_American Labor leader Eugene Debs graced the cover of the November 10, 1894 edition, in the wake of organizing, leading and settling the Pullman strike. I believe this issue is excruciatingly rare. This is the only example I have ever seen. It’s great appeal is as a display piece (I haven’t read the entire issue but don’t see any feature on Debs; he had achieved great fame just prior and I think they were just presenting his portrait). The 32-page issue appears to have been removed from a bound book of The Illustrated American magazines and is reinforced with three staples along the spine (as seen if you look closely enough). This displays beautifully. I wouldn’t want to have to find another example of this magazine. I don’t think I will ever see another! (If you have this please let me know so I can update this description!)
