Description: This listing is for a 1920s Jewish Fund Raising token from the Home of Old Israel in New York City. This brass token measures 1 1/4" across and weighs 10 grams. Founded in 1922 by real estate developer, Louis Singer, to provide free housing, meals, activities and care of the aged. In 1922, the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (the rabbinical seminary of Yeshiva University) was located at 301-303 East Broadway, and only moved to 186th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in 1928/1929. The Home must not have also occupied the East Broadway address, therefore, until 1928/1929. Thus, the token can be tentatively dated to 1928 (while the Home was still located at Henry Street but after it expanded into East Broadway). It was probably issued in connection with the 1928 fund drive for the Jefferson Street property. Obverse: Pictured is an old man and woman. It is captioned "TO PITY IS HUMAN - TO HELP IS GODLIKE - HOME OF OLD ISRAEL - 294 HENRY ST. N.Y.C." Says in Hebrew "ל תשליכני לעת זקנה", which translates to "DO NOT CAST ME OFF AT OUR OLD AGE". Reverse: Pictures a building in the center and is captioned "HELP US BUILD OUR NEW HOME - CONTRIBUTION ONE DOLLAR - 301-2-3 E. BWAY., N.Y.C." This is in very good condition. Please see the photos for more detail. Money-back guarantee. I will combine shipping on multiple purchases.
