Description: These books were some of the ones my great aunt had as a young teenager sometime in the 1920’s Both books are cloth-covered paper hardbacks measuring 7-5/8”x 5” and are in good condition considering their age . The covers and spine, though slightly loose, are still firmly attached to the pages. The cover, spine, and back has chips and stains to the colored cloth covering and there is fraying around the cloth edges, especially on Gulliver’s. Also, on Gulliver’s thespine is more faded than the covers and is torn, perhaps eaten by anancestorial mouse, at the top. The pages show some aged darkening from time with some darker discoloring around the edges, (see all pictures). Gulliver's Travels Undated copy of the classic novel published by the Goldsmith Publishing Company of New York. I can’t find the exact publishing data on this copy but looks like it was sometime between 1918 and 1931. Unlike later editions, there is no Table of Contents or Index. By author Jonathan Swift, Anglo-Irish writer and clergyman (11/30/1667–10/19/1745), it is a misadventure story involving several voyages by Lemuel Gulliver, who because of a series of mishaps, ends up on several unknown islands living with people and animals of unusual sizes, behaviors, and philosophies. The story was written as a satire on human nature. It is Swift's best-known full-length work and a classic of English literature. Croatan This October 1923 reprinting of the first edition is a novel by Mary Johnson published by Little, Brown, and Company of Boston, MA. With a reproduced color illustration of an early Virginia map on the inside of both covers, this is a historical romance of settlers and Native American strife and a fictional account of Sir Walter Raleigh's lost Virginia colony. Mary Johnston (11/21/1870–05/09/1936) was an American novelist and women's rights advocate from Virginia. She was one of America's bestselling authors during her writing career and had three silent films adapted from hernovels.
