Description: Antique 17th century Turkish Ottoman Islamic War Axe to sword shamshir dagger Antique 17th century Turkish Ottoman Islamic War Axe Click images to enlarge Description Rare antique,17th century Turkish Ottoman large war axe, Islamic Osmanli, Teber with a large head made of well hand-forged steel with visible forging layers. Comprising a massive crescent-shaped blade, a central hexagonal-shaped block chased by slender vertical grooves, the rear with a projecting shaped fluke with a square hammer. Mounted on its original handcrafted cylindrical wood haft, it broadened at the top to prevent the steel head from sliding off the haft. In this type of battle axes with a large crescent-shaped blade were armed soldiers of the elite Ottoman infantry, the famous Janissaries corps. The Ottoman axes were made in two versions: an elaborate gold inlaid parade and ceremonial axes, and plain fighting axes. These types of Ottoman-style axes were also made and used in the 17th century in Hungary, Poland, and Russia. CONDITION: In its original condition, age and usage are showing. Impact nicks on the blade's cutting edge and the rear hammer indicate that the axe was used in combat. Wooden haft with a beautiful glossy dark patina.
