White spots or glare from reflective surface in intense natural light, not on the plate itself. A stunning antique Japanese ceramic plate with a theme of the popular old card game called 100 poets. Fine hand painted miniature paintings in the form of cards showcase 6 of the 100 poets with corresponding poem cards which have lovely rainbow colored pastel backgrounds, recalling the art of skies in Japanese prints. The poet portraits are outlined in black, the poem cards in a gold frame. Background of this design is a gorgeous Aochibu pattern in blue and gold. The teeny blue dots applied to the surface are incredible and also finely executed in keeping with the poet paintings. Found online : "Aochibu - “Ao” means blue color, “chibu” means dot in English. Aochibu has three colors of dots - blue, white and gold. Blue is the most popular. Aochibu was developed around 1910 in Kutani district. The dots are painted by hand, one by one. Some works have a swirly pattern. High skills are required to paint each unique dot size, color and shape. " Plate has a fairly deep upturn, approx. 1-1/2" deep . A mum like floral and scroll motif repeats 3 times around the under rim. Back marked as shown, not sure I have the characters oriented correctly, sorry. Beautiful pre-owned antique condition. No chips, cracks or restoration. Some light wear to hand painted elements including the gold grounds in the poet cards, and age appropriate gilt wear along edge rim. A few surface scratches or perhaps they are long-ish crazing lines on a few hand painted figures seen on very close examination. A few small dimples in the topside of plate which occurred in the making. Displays beautifully ! Coloring deep and rich overall. Please see all pics, many given, and full item description.
