Description: Very rare Japanese carving of seated Tenman Daijizai Tenjin, a Shinto sky deity. This item comes to you from a venerable Southern California estate. I acquired it many years ago directly from the owner who bought it from a shop in Japan; he was told that it was made in the Edo era (which seems about right for the look and feel of it, though I am by no means an expert). Carved from blonde-toned wood -- Paulownia? Yellow Cedar? -- and joined in several sections, the statue displays residue of its original polychromed pigments, and measures approximately 8 inches tall, 10 inches wide, and 4 ½ inches deep. Overall condition is good for its considerable age: obvious wear and peeling to pigments, scuffs and scratches, slight splits to wood, etc. Also, the section of left sleeve has been re-glued at the original seam; and his paddle is missing. Displays beautifully. In the Japanese notion of Kami, objects gain a soul after 99 years of existence, and this piece definitely has soul. A very rare item that compares favorably to other examples in the Nara Museum in Japan. Please feel free to ask and and all questions you may have. FREE & FAST SHIPPING! 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK!
