Description: This listing is for a late 17th to early 18th century Dutch school portrait painting. The painting depicts an older high class gentleman in period clothing. The painting is an oil on canvas and comes in a later gilt wood frame. We were informed that this could possibly be a portrait of the Dutch artist, Willem Van De Velde the elder possibly painted by his son, Willem Van De Velde the younger. There is writing on the reverse of the painting which was added later (probably during the 19th century or earlier). We were told that the writing is most likely an attempted (partially correct) transcription of writing attached to the original frame, which is perhaps why some of the information does not entirely make sense. The reverse reads "VA Van de Velde Mc Pinxit anno 1726 at a 70. Desiderio mis C. Gruttel ad X filü mei." From Latin, this means something along the lines of " painted by Van de Velde in 1726 at age 70" The rest seems to point that someone is giving this painting to their son. The date of 1726 seems to be incorrectly transcribed. It might have been mistaken for 1680 in old style font. It's quite an intriguing piece regardless and definitely an eye catcher. 32.25 x 38.5 inches This painting appears to be in overall good condition. There are some signs of normal wear and age. Under UV light, there are signs of several touch ups over the years
