Description: This is a Fantastic Antique Old 1895 American Folk Art ARCTIC Exploration North Pole Polar Bear Oil Painting on Artist Board, by 19th century Salt Lake City, Utah artist, Anna Elizabeth Palmer Hefty (1877 - 1954,) which approximately dates to 1895. This artwork depicts a fearful scene in the midst of an Arctic expedition, with a mother Polar Bear confronting a small boat of explorers, with her small cub standing on an iceberg further out. In the far distance, a coal burning schooner, a pinkish hued sunset sky, and tall and eccentric ice capped mountain peaks are visible. The mother Polar Bear growls at the interlopers with aggression and maternal protectiveness, while the explorers scramble to gather up wooden clubs and rifles. A lovely and creative detail is flecks of translucent glitter, which have been carefully blended with the paint in certain areas to represent snowflakes (see Photo 9, and the various other photos.) Annotated in ink at the top right edge of the verso of the frame: "Anna Elizabeth Palmer Hefty. About 17 years of age, 1895." Additionally, affixed to the verso of this piece is a contemporary white backing paper which includes additional biographical details about the artist. Approximately 21 3/4 x 27 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 18 x 24 inches. Very good condition for well over a century of age, with a few small scuffs to the painted surface, and mild scuffing, edge wear and paint loss to the original period 19th century antique frame. This fascinating artwork may depict the 1891 - 1892 Peary Expedition to Greenland, led by the legendary Arctic explorer, Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (1856 - 1920,) to determine if Greenland was an island, or a peninsula of the North Pole.
