Description: Stylishly, historically unique antique! Very rare triangular design side table/plant stand with tiled top. This item was acquired from a venerable Theosophical estate here in Ojai, California. Very elegant shape and silhouette. Lovely contrasting pink and cyan colors. Hand-wrought copper-bronze alloy legs support a table-tray-top with asymmetrically shaped red earthenware tiles fitted within metal cells. Beautifully hammered rim surround. Interestingly, the terra-cotta appears to have been fired within the cells, so perfectly are they fitted in their compartments -- the metal structure was created first, then the clay smoothed into each cell, and the entire table fired in a kiln (the melting-point of bronze being far higher than the 800 or 900 degrees required to fire the earthenware). A technique I've never seen before! Extensive research has found no other similar examples; yet very well made, it is, although unsigned. Estimated date of creation is 1910 - 1920. Style and craftsmanship are equal the great names of the era: Gustav Stickley, Dirk van Erp, Karl Kipp, etc. Possibly a prototype by one of these designers? Iron stretchers riveted to the alloy legs add stable tensile-strength; however, this is a table designed for light duty display, small potted plants, etc. Perfect for that hard-to-fit corner of your patio or garden area. Tripod design ensures it will stand solid on uneven surfaces. Table measures 20 inches in height, 18 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. (classic Stickley proportions.) Weight is just over 10 pounds. Overall good condition; some age-related wear, patination and pitting to tile surface; very slight water-ring at one corner; one corner shows minor damage; striking copper verdigris patina to bronze alloy; rusted iron, etc. (all as pictured in the listing photographs). NB: This is a handmade antique item well over 100 years-old; please expect variations, imperfections and idiosyncrasies that are all part of this table's antique charm. As you can see, this piece displays absolutely beautifully. Wonderfully authentic 'Old California' Arts & Crafts style! Please feel free to ask any and all questions you may have.
