Notes: Parium (Parion) was an ancient city of Mysia on the Propontis between Lampsacus and Priapus founded in 709 BC. It was a a colony probably founded by Eretria and Paros. The city is located in what is now the village of Kemer in the township of Biga in Çanakkale province of Turkey. It belonged to the Delian League and in the Hellenistic period it came under the domain of Lysimachus, and subsequently the Attalid dynasty. A major coastal city with two harbors in the Roman period, Parion had intensive relations with Thrace and Anatolia throughout history. In Roman times, it was a colonia, within the province of Asia; after that province was divided in the 4th century, it was in the province of Hellespontus. The ancient coinage of Parium is quite abundant, attesting to its great output and advanced mint (in Hellenistic times, the city's badge shown on coins was the Gorgoneion. Circa 300 B.C. the city produced Bronze coins featuring obv. Bull, rev. The great altar of Parium built by Hermocreon. Hermocreon was a Greek architect of the ~3rd cent. BC and according to Strabo he built a state altar, 1 stadia long (~600 ft) , from the material of an abandoned temple near Parium which is presumably the one depicted on some bronze coins.
