Title: A Plurality of Worlds Publication: [London]: The Nonesuch Press, 1929 Edition: Limited Edition Description: Leather_bound. Conversations on the Plurality of Worlds, Bernard de Fontenelle's 1686 popular science book, exploring the knowledge of Descartes and Copernicus and offering an early exposition of cosmic pluralism (the idea that the stars are distant suns with their own planetary systems, including the possibility of extraterrestrial life), is presented here by the Nonesuch Press in an edition of 1600, of which this is number 1478, designed by Francis Meynell, composed by T. W. Hay at the Nonesuch Press, printed on Van Gelder paper at the Curwen Press, and starring color-stencilled decorations by T. L. Poulton, the remainder composed of astronomical signs. Ex libris Alfred Sutro OBE (1863-1933), English playwright, writer, and translator, with his small leather bookplate to front pastedown. Edition limited to 1200 copies for sale by the Nonesuch Press and 400 copies for sale in the United States by Random House, of which this is number 1478. 8 1/8" X 5 3/8". ix, [ii], 2-138pp. Bound in full limp vellum, with three star-spangled silhouettes of naked flying women stamped in gilt to front and spine lettered in gilt, housed in a slipcase covered in green and gold patterned paper. Mild wear to binding, with faint dust soiling to covers, gentle bumping to extremities, heavy toning to front free endpaper from facing bookplate, and possible whiff of cigar smoke to pages. Heavier wear to slipcase, slightly warped, with sunning, bumping to corners, and chipping and tears to decorative paper at edges and extremities. Very good.
