Description: This photo comes from a trainee in the 5th Mechanic Reserve Officer course which was conducted at Yokosuka in c1942. Approximate size: 6 inches x 4.25 inches The Yokosuka Naval Air Group was the first aviation unit established by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1916. It played a crucial role in educating and training aviation personnel, testing new aircraft, and conducting tactical research. The group’s responsibilities included defending Tokyo Bay during emergencies. Later, during World War II, it also participated in combat operations. Unfortunately, due to intense air combat and enemy raids, all its aircraft were lost during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1944. The remaining service members continued to engage in kamikaze attacks and air defense battles in the Kantō area. The Yokosuka Naval Air Group’s legacy lives on as an important part of Japan’s aviation history. During the early 1940s, Yokosuka was a significant naval base in Japan. Originally an Imperial Japanese Navy base, it underwent a transformation during the Occupation era after World War II. Before that transformation, Yokosuka served primarily as a Marine Barracks, a naval hospital, and a ship repair and maintenance facility for the U.S. fleet in the Pacific. In the summer of 1945, the base officials surrendered to American forces, and the base was taken over by the U.S. Marines, the U.S. Navy, and the British forces. Eventually, only the U.S. Navy remained on-site. Captain Benton Weaver Decker played a crucial role in improving efficiency and transforming Yokosuka into a pilot plant for democracy. Citizens elected their own officials, and various community organizations formed, marking a significant shift from its secretive past.
