Cox was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers, April 2, 1865, for gallant and meritorious service at Forts Stedman, and Sedgwick, Va. Cox served a year in North Carolina as a major in the 171st PA Infantry, before taking command of the 207th Pa. “While in front of Petersburg, the regiment present General Cox with a horse and complete outfit, valued at $550, as a token of their appreciation of his soldierly qualities and the warm place he had in their affections.” (Obit of Gen.
