Description: Civil War import M/1849 Austrian for Garibaldi rifle, US leather scabbard with original brass tip. Rare! This has an American made leather scabbard with brass tip. Most of these scabbards were lost or destroyed. The massive bayonet blade has some staining, but should polish up well as the surfaces, for the most part, are smooth. A massive Civil War sword socket bayonet with rare leather scabbard. This is for the Austrian Model 1849 Jaeger rifle known in US import records as "the Garibaldi rifle." This example is complete with its original basal locking ring/clasp & comes with its original American-made leather scabbard. These bayonets have a long storied history. The guns were imported from Austria thru Governor's Island in New York, then sent to the West. They are illustrated & described in European Bayonets of the American Civil War by Noe & Serbaroli on page 94, where they quote 2 letters from Capt Silas Crispin to General James Ripley. " I have now available for issue nearly 20,000 Austrian rifles, furnished with the flat bayonet peculiar to these arms, and which requires a special scabbard." And in the 2nd letter, "As the bayonets appertaining to these arms are of a peculiar construction, differing from all other models, it will be necessary before these arms be issued to troops that suitable scabbards & frogs shall be provided." The American leather scabbard with its original brass tip and partial frog is extremely rare as very few survived. Most of the time, these bayonets are found in rusted or pitted condition and without a scabbard This one has smooth surfaces and some slight staining that can be cleaned or polished out. This is a better-than-average example. In 30 yrs, I've seen some with Austrian scabbards, but I've never seen a Garibaldi with original American-made scabbard.
