Description: Daniel Meisner (1585-1625) was the publisher of a town atlas known popularly as the "Sciographia Cosmica". The engravings in the atlas were made by a number of different artists such as Matthaus Merian and Sebastien Furck. This particular example is not signed. There were a number of editions of the work during the 17th century, with the first being published in 1623. I am not certain which edition this print was published in; however, the print in the 1638 edition that can be found online is to my eyes exactly the same. The charming and interesting print offered here has a Latin phrase at the top, "Cura Atque Otio", which according to Google Translate means "Care and Repose". Just below that phrase, in the image, is "Cleef" or "Kleef" (the Table of Contents to the 1638 edition says "Cleff"). This is a city in northwest Germany, on the border with the Netherlands, that is famous for the Schwanenburg Castle, which can be seen in the print. Examined closely, there are very interesting details. For example, to the left of center there is some type of framework with an object hanging by rope in which several birds look particularly interested. There is also a swan that appears to be writing something in a large book or ledger. I found the swan of particular interest. On further exploration, it turns out that there is an association between swans and Schwanenburg Castle (this should not be too surprising as the word schwan is the German word for the English swan) via the legend of the nameless Knight of the Swan that formed the basis for Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin. This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
