Dead Souls

Description: Dead Soulsby Nikolai Gogol First printing, preceding the later two volume issue Publisher & Year: T.Y. Crowell, NY (1886)-Edition: This is the true first printing of the complete book in English, per Edward Line's bibliography. The book was previously printed in English in 1854, but the translators omitted large portions of the text and took many other liberties with the writing, such that it is not considered a complete version of the text. The publisher of the first complete printing in English, T.Y. Crowell, released the book in November of 1886 as a two-volume set bound in maroon buckram boards with the Romanov seal stamped in gilt on the front cover. The first edition features floral endpapers, a catalogue of advertisements bound in the rear, and the publisher's address of 13 Astor Place (NYC) on the title page (the publisher's location in 1886 until approximately 1890). The design of the boards, the floral endpapers, and the 13 Astor Place address are also present in the publisher's other Russian literature offerings in 1886, including Crime and Punishment and Anna Karenina. Later issues of Dead Souls were done in a single volume with thinner paper and bear the hallmarks of Crowell's 1890s productions: plain endpapers, no mention of the 13 Astor Place address, and no advertisements in the rear. -Description: See pictures for condition. Hinges and binding quite sturdy, although each volume has light cracking at the front endpapers. Vol 1 has a tanned spine, a portrait of Gogol adhered to the page facing the title page, and previous owners' names on the front endpaper/flyleaf (one of them is Julia D. Whiting, a writer in the 19th and early 20th century). No writing or underlining otherwise. A presentable copy of an exceptionally scarce classic.
