This textile is late 17th or early 18th century, English Crewelwork , I date this textile c1685-1699~ this textile is part of a bed hanging set ( to view the other pieces simply search my store for the words " English Crewelwork " and they will appear! This is one of the bed side valances and the longest of the set. This is a wool embroidery, all hand worked. The ground is a twill weave, cotton and linen mix. The ground is still very sturdy. This wonderful textile has later alterations. There is a backing , lightly basted with a long running stitch ~ Someone has pieced this panel to create this valance at some point. The piecework is all stitched by hand though there is a machine stitch around the borders! ~ It's a mound design with wonderful flowering blooms inspired by the Indian hand painted chintz at that time and the mound tones are still wonderfully saturated! ~ A beautiful textile very rare indeed!~ The warmth of the ground tone only comes from time, it's has a stunning patina ~ MEASUREMENTS : This panel measures approximately : 74 inches by 19 inches ~ CONDITION : Condition of this textile is commensurate with its age~ gorgeous but not without signs of time and use ~ It's best to use the zoom feature on the photographs to see the exact condition ~ there are some pale discolorations , thread loss , tiny rust marks here and there ( very tiny) signs of time and use often inherent in these remarkable textiles that have survived for many generations ~ Inventory number : W 1
