Common Name Gaboon Ebony, African Ebony, Nigerian Ebony, Cameroon Ebony Latin Diospyros Crassiflora Distribution Equatorial West Africa Item Dimensions Thickness: 1.5" Width: 1.5" Length: 24" (1.5" x 1.5" x 24") Shipping Continental US Only Common Uses Small/ornamental items, such as piano keys, musical instrument parts, pool cues, carvings, and other small specialty items. Grain/Texture Grain is usually straight but can also be interlocked. Fine even texture with very high natural luster. Rot Resistance Ebony is rated as being very durable, with good resistance to termites and other insects. Workability Can be difficult to work due to its extremely high density. Has a dulling effect on cutters. Tearout may occur on pieces that have interlocked or irregular grain. Due to the high oil content found in this wood, it can occasionally cause problems with gluing. Finishes well, and polishes to a high luster. Responds well to steam bending. Allergies/Toxicity Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, Ebony in the Diospyros genus has been reported as a sensitizer. Usually most common reactions simply include eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. The wood has been sealed with Paraffin wax to help protect against cracking. If you will be turning the wood, the wax doesn't need to be removed, it will come off naturally. Otherwise, scrub with a solvent, such as mineral spirits, to break the wax barrier. Follow with several applications of Acetone applied with gray scotch bright pads to scrub the surface. Keep the wood in a controlled environment, cool, not too dry or hot. Use sharp tools and work slowly to generate minimal heat. Note: more drying maybe needed. **No guarantee of pure black, Ebony often has traces of brown**
