This is a red fist with two thumbs that is clutching a green peyote button. Thompson's work was first described as being 'gonzo' in 1970, and he immediately embraced the term for his own unique style of literary chaos. Later that year, when he ran for sheriff of Pitkin County, in Colorado, the gonzo fist was visualized and used on his campaign posters.
