He is one of the most prestigious conductors of the twentieth century and possessed a photographic memory that allowed him to direct without score. He did not use baton, but grandiloquent gestures. Fervent devotee of the Greek Orthodox Church, he led an ascetic and monastic life. He died of a heart attack while rehearsing Mahler's Third Symphony in Milan. In his honor the Contest Dmitri Mitropoulos was established for conductors of orchestra.The coin depicts a portrait of Dimitris Mitropoulosm superimposed on a background of musical notes. The legend "120 YEARS OF THE BIRTH OF DIMITRI MITROPOULOS" is nscribed on the left inner edge, as well as the text "HELENIC REPUBLIC", in Greek.
