Although there are several excellent textbooks on different aspects of acoustics theory or practice and some handbooks on specialized topics in acoustics and vibration, no single volume gives a comprehensive treatment. Up-to-date discussions on all topics of acoustics are certainly to be found in journals, periodicals, books, and conference proceedings. But the serious reader who wants a good understanding of acoustics needs to consult at least fifteen or twenty journals and five to ten books. Considering the continuing rapid expansion of scientific knowledge and the fact for just a few specialists, it is very difficult for a reader to obtain even an elementary grasp of many acoustic topics without considerable effort. For these same reasons, it became apparent to me some years ago that no one author could really do justice to the whole field of acoustics and that a multiple-author book would be needed to introduce the reader to important topics in the whole filed of acoustics.
