Description: Kona Legends by Eliza Maguire illustrations by Eva Anderson These traditional tales describe the Kekaha area from the coastline to the slopes of Hualalai in the Kona district of the island of Hawai‘i. The origins of place names, significant events, cultural practices, daily life, and Hawaiian deities populate the pages. When John Avery Maguire established Hu‘ehu‘e Ranch in 1886, local residents pointed out landmarks as they shared their family stories. They were first recorded in print in 1923 when Isaac Kihe, a local teacher and native of Kekaha, preserved them in a series of articles in the Hawaiian language newspaper, Ka Hoku o Hawaii, published in Hilo by Rev. Stephen Desha. Eliza Davis Low Maguire, John’s second wife, was also from a ranching family at nearby Puu Waawaa Ranch. She was inspired by Kihe’s writing to gather these stories and translated them into English, publishing her collection, Kona Legends, in 1926. These timeless tales reveal the secrets of this land, retell familiar legends of this locale, and exemplify the enduring legacy of Hawaiian traditions.
