Description: Mervyns California Missions Series Vintage San Luis Rey NO CROSS History: Mission San Luis Rey, named for King Louis lX of France, was established on June 13th, 1798. Eighteenth of the 21 California Missions, San Luis was the last Mission built under the direction of Father Fermin Lasuen. Mission San Luis, called "King of the Missions," was the largest and most populous of all. Mission San Luis had a sunken garden with exotic plants and fruit trees, including the first pepper tree planted in California. The garden also featured an open-air laundry.
