Monkey Tail Cactus - 25 Seeds - From Hand Pollinated Flowers

Description: Monkey Tail Cactus Seeds -> 25 Seeds <- From Hand Pollinated Flowers From The Best Of The Best Tails With The Best Genetic Characteristics. These seeds have been collected starting mid June, and collection will continue as long as my tails continue to produce flowers worthy of hand pollination. I adhere to accepted seed storage techniques, so they will remain viable for 1-2 years. Growing Monkey Tail Cactus from seed is easy and no different than any other growing techniques of growing cactus from seed. YouTube has many videos about how and what is needed to successfully germinate cactus seeds...I encourage you to watch several of the available videos and choose the technique that appeals to you. All of the pictures in this listing are of my plants, flowers and seeds. Because modern postal sorting machines are in use, I have to ship in padded mailers...mailing seeds in a standard envelope runs the risk of crushing the seeds. Seeds are black, kidney shaped and about 1 mm long...they are tiny. Want to know more about Monkey Tail Cactus...then read on: Monkey Tail cactus...the cactus everyone wants to have in their collection...and everyone wants to touch when they see it. Known by a couple of scientific names: Hildewintera colademononis, Cleistocactus colademononis, but the current accepted scientific name is: Cleistocactus winteri subsp. colademononis, but everyone just calls it a Monkey Tail cactus. If you want to impress your plant friends, here is how you pronounce it:Cleistocactus ---> Kly-stoh-KAK-tuscolademononis ---> koh-luh-dee-mon-OH-nis How did it get its name? I'm glad you asked. Besides looking like a furry monkey tail...colademononis is the Spanish word for monkey tail. The native habitat of the cactus is from South America, the country of Bolivia, the department (state) of Santa Cruz, the province (area) of Florida, on the remote Cerro El Fraile mountain., where it grows in the cracks and crevices, and drapes itself over large rocks...it is considered an epilithic cactus. The cactus is a relatively new discovery. It was first found in 2003...officially ID'd in 2006 in a cactus publication/journal...and introduced to cactus/plant collectors in 2007. In habitat the stems (tails) are reported to grow up to 8'-9' in length, and the hair is actually soft spines, which grow on average 1.5" - 3", up to 4.5" in length. Close to the base of the stems (tails), there are the typical cactus spines that everyone is familiar with when a cactus is envisioned. The further away from the base of the tail, the more hair like and softer the spines...and they will not puncture the skin when touched...which everyone does when they see a fuzzy tail. With age the short stems (tails) become pendant (drooping/hanging), which lends this cactus to being grown in hanging baskets, or perhaps a pot placed on a pedestal. Newly planted stems (tails) tend to branch at the base, usually creating 3-4 new tails. Should a tail break off, one or more new tails will typically emerge and grow into independent stems/tails. Compared to other cactus, the Monkey Tail is considered a moderate to rapid grower, especially after the initial tail has some length to it. The Monkey Tail cactus typically flower/bloom late spring to early fall...when it's somewhat warm. Flowers are typically red to reddish-orange in color, and usually last for about 4-5 days after opening. When the flowers shrivel up, at the base will be a small fruit about 0.25" in diameter, and inside will be about 10-20 tiny black seeds. I grow mine in a quick draining soil mix, and only water when the soil is completely dry. My hanging baskets stay in the greenhouse year round. USDA hardiness zones for this cactus are reported to be 9-11 (please check your location). The plastic covering on my greenhouse is rated for about 15%-20% shade...so these cactus like very bright light. I encourage you to do a Google search for more info and growing tips...I believe there are several on-line videos also. I have a Facebook group with 10,000+ members world wide: "Monkey And Fox Tail Cactus Enthusiast", that contains more info about this species of cactus than anywhere else...please consider joining if you'd like to know and learn more about this unique species of cactus. I personally have approximately 2000 tails in various stages of growth, from seedlings to mature tails, some over 48" long. Please take a look as my other unusual plant offerings.
