Description: This is a wonderfully preserved x-large, 13" long, Sclerocephalus fossil and smaller 2.75" amphibian species in a rock matrix. Sclerocephalus were a carnivorous temnospondyl amphibian species that lived during the Permian Period around 290 million years ago. They were x-large salamander-like amphibians that could reach up to 5 feet in length. It appears as if the smaller amphibian is in the larger one’s mouth. Amphibian aspiration? 'Storytelling' fossils, like this one, are truly amazing and are an important contribution to science. If this one is feeding, it confirms the species diet was a mixture of fish and other amphibians. Ferocious little creatures! The fossils locality was Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany making this specimen ultra rare since that site has been closed to collecting since the 1980's. The fossil displays details of the amphibian’s skeleton with black surrounding matter which is carbonized skin rather than an impression. This is the actual soft tissue that managed to fossilize. The matrix measures 15.125" x 12" x .5" thick (approximately) and weighs 3.6 lbs. The large one measures 13" long and the smaller one measures 2.75". The matrix shows signs of repair with the fossil having minor restoration. The back of the fossil has been sealed for stability. This extraordinary fossil is in excellent condition and comes with a free Riker display box.CuratingWe have been collecting and selling on eBay now for over 20 years!
