Description: This historically important enamel cup was intended as a souvenir for citizens celebrating the coronation of Czar Nicholas II and Czarina Alexandra at an outdoor festival on May 18, 1896. The crowd, estimated at over half a million, was much greater than the venue could accommodate, and when a rumor circulated that the cups contained gold rubles, mass hysteria broke out and a stampede ensued. When it all was over, more than a thousand people had been trampled to death. As a result, the coronation souvenir became known as the “Cup of Sorrow” and as the “Bloody Chalice.” One side of the cup has the Cyrillic ciphers “H” and “A” for Nicholas and Alexandra. The other side the Two-headed Romanov Eagle and the year 1896. The condition of the cup, as the photographs attest, is very good. There are small chips in the enamel around the lip and the bottom; the inside is relatively chip free. There are no restorations. The cup measures approximately 4.125 inches tall by3.75 inches in diameterPlease examine the photographs carefully as they are an integral part of the description. Also see our Nicholas and Alexandra Pewter Beaker Honoring 1896 Visit to France on elsewhere on eBay.
