HISTORY: A complete history can be found on line from various sources, here is a brief summary:Once dubbed the “East Side Degas,” Russian-Jewish émigré and social-realist painter Raphael Soyer depicted ordinary men and women in contemporary settings. He was known for his Social-Realist paintings of daily life in New York. His painterly yet detailed descriptions of people and places, make him among the most important American scene painters of his generation. ADOLESCENTS, 1971 is a five-color lithograph proofed by hand and pulled by machine from one stone and four zinc plates on Arches paper at the Shorewood-Bank Street Atelier, New York. It measures 18 inches by 24 inches. It bears the distinctive blindstamp of the printer. (BSA). This work was published by David Godine for the Center for Constitutional Rights. This marvelous vintage from the early Seventies was created for the legendary portfolio "CONSPIRACY: the Artist as Witness" (which also featured works by Alexander Calder, Jack Beal, Romare Bearden Leon Golub-Nancy Spero, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Poons, Peter Saul, Robert Morris Frank Stella, Sol Lewitt as well as this one by Raphael Soyer) to raise money for the legal defense of the Chicago 8 - a group of anti-Vietnam War activists. Soyer's work has been collected by major museums: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Whitney Museum of American Art|The Metropolitan Museum of Art|National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.|Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden|Dallas Museum of Art|Art Institute of Chicago|Jewish Museum D.C. ###
