Until recently, members of the United States Air Force were authorized to wear colored, unit-specific T-Shirts under their uniforms on fridays. The purpose was to establish Esprit de corps, to boost moral, pride and camaraderie. In addition, the sale of these and also the unit ball caps, would benefit the squadron by providing funds for unit functions. That practice of wearing moral shirts has since been abolished per current military regulation. What makes this particular moral shirt so unique was the fact that, although it was designed in the fashion of old aircraft nose art, and briefly worn by the members of the 18th Air Refueling Squadron, it was deemed offensive and the commander at the the time banned it from wear on base – even in civilian attire.
