The movie was expanded from an episode of the television series "The Asphalt Jungle," that ran 13 episodes in 1961. The series was loosely based on the 1950 theatrical film of the same name, but focused on a detective squad led by Jack Warden. When it looked like the series was going to be a loser on the ratings front the studio picked the episode "The Lady and The Lawyer" and expanded it into a film for a strictly European release.They used the same director and actors as before, and shot extra minutes of film to pad out the run time. Those minutes contain a surprising amount of risqué matter for 1961, namely quick semi-nude scenes. Eyebrow-raising. Shown overseas only.
