Description: Roman Imperial, Germanicus copper As, 15 B.C.-19 A.D., Sear 601, R.I.C. 106 (Claudius), approx. 23-24 mm diameter, 9 gm. The obverse shows the bare head of Germanicus to the right, with the legend "GERMANICVS CAESAR TI. AVGVST F. DIVI. AVG. N." The reverse shows the legend "TI. CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG. GERM. P.M. TR.P. IMP.P. P. ", with a large "S. C." in the center. Germanicus was the son of Nero Claudius Drusus and Antonia, was adopted by Tiberius, brother of Claudius, and father of Caligula. The piece is mostly dark brown on both sides, with the raised profile, and some of the lettering showing just an aged copper color rather than the dark brown. In the field on the right side, in front of the profile, someone has scraped through the dark toning and left a group of lighter colored marks showing through to the aged copper color. There are a couple of planchet defect marks in the field above the "S C". Coins with his name on them were struck about 20 years after his death. This is a genuine original coin, not a copy, replica, or reproduction. EX. A. Coggins, 15 Feb 1989.
