It is associated with the Biblical Gilead and was 1st mentioned as a Hellenistic settlement when Israel was conquered by Antiochus III the Great. The Gadarenes are mentioned in Luke 8:37 and Mark 5. It was the birthplace of Menippos the slave who became a cynic philosopher in the 3rd century BC. It was then conquered by Alexander Jannaeus early in the 1st century BC and was soon destroyed in a war between Aristobulus II and Hyrcanus II. Pompey took and rebuilt the city in 63 BC, and became known as Pompeian Gadara. In 30 BC Augustus gave it to Herod the Great, but after he died it became joined with the Province of Syria as an autonomous city with a right to mint its own coins. During the Jewish Revolt of 66 AD, all the youths of Gadara were slain and the town was burned. The town was rebuilt by the Romans. Following the Battle of Yarmouk in 636, the town became Muslim but in 747 it was destroyed by an earthquake and abandoned. Today, the archaeological site is a popular tourist attraction.
