Description: 80 Anniversary Commemorative Medal Honoring the Contribution of Nikolai Pilyugin into the Soviet Space Program This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL medal minted in the USSR in 1988 and officially issued by the Federation of Cosmonautics of the USSR. This is NOT a souvenir, post-Soviet issue or a replica! The medal is very well made. Both the medallion and suspension device are in tombac (high quality brass). The medallion measures 28.3 mm (H) (including island) x 24.7 mm (W). The obverse has a nicely detailed portrait of Pilyugin in high 3-D profile. The reverse of the medallion reads: “N.A. Pilyugin LXXX years since birthday 1908 – 1988”. The medal was issued posthumously for N.A. Pilyugin who passed away on August 2, 1982.The raised oval logo of the Leningrad Mint shows on the metal of the reverse next to the ribbon above the pin. The medal is in excellent condition, with no dings, scratches or scuffing. The metal of the reverse shows a little attractive toning. The ribbon is clean and the pin attachment is fully functional. This medal can be a great addition to a collection of Soviet awards or international space memorabilia, particularly because it features one of the less public figures who made major contributions to space technology and exploration. In this case, the medal commemorates the life of Nikolai Alekseevich Pilyugin, Soviet chief designer of rocket guidance systems. He was a designer of control systems for boosters and spacecraft. He participated in designing the first ICBM "R-7" and Soviet space shuttle Buran. FREE SHIPPING (USPS 1st cl. Mail) WITHIN USA ONLY!We WILL NOT ship our eBay items outside USA.
