You know I have lots to tell you, right?Get comfy and read on...!Let's play!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~NOTE: Archive pictures are used to illustrate and demonstrate the care, essential parts and features of a functioning Singer Walking Presser Foot SIMANCO 160741, also called a Penguin, using my Singer Featherweight 221.~The driving arm sits under the needle clamp screw. As the needle bar rises and comes down to stitch, the attachment "walks", waddling like a Penguin, securing the top layer against the feed dog below feeding the layers evenly under the moving needle (red arrows). This well engineered attachment is highly valued by machine patchworkers and quilters for its ability to evenly feed multiple layers of fabric and batting smoothly under the stitching needle without pushing the top layer forward, bunching up the fabric or sewing over unwanted creases. One of the more difficult to find and most desirable vintage Singer attachments. Singer offered their sturdy Walking Presser Foot to owners of Singer straight stitch sewing machines. It will not fit the later developed vintage slant needle Singer sewing machines such as the Singer 301-301a. Unfortunately Singer never manufactured an all metal black SIMANCO 160741 Penguin Walking Presser Foot for their slant needle series. A Singer Walking Presser Foot 160741 is an expensive investment. Let me show you a few care tips to keep your vintage treasure in good condition and a few very important things to look for if you have your eye on a Penguin from somewhere else. Care TipsMachine patchworkers and quilters use good quality cotton threads which can shed lint. This lint can accumulate in your walking foot.Look closely for the ball of red fuzzy thread lint in the picture below. See it? Over time, this fine fuzzy lint can accumulate between the driving arm and the right black metal side wall of the walking foot housing (red arrow). Mixed with a film of machine oil and it will become a lump of gunk. If not removed with a dry lint brush regularly during quilting, the build up of thread fuzz can displace the right foot causing the two steel feet to rub, catch or lock up completely. After brushing away the lint, oil all moving parts of your Singer walking foot before storing. Oiling reduces the risk of corrosion and extends the life of your Singer treasure. I use coffee filter paper to wrap recently oiled attachments for storage. What to look for!The Singer Walking Presser Foot has two internal springs which must be intact and rust free for the foot to operate correctly. These two springs assist with the "waddling walk". They are inside the black metal housing out of harm's way. If the walking foot has been neglected, the springs may be fragile or broken due to rust.Spring 1(blue arrow) Spring 2(blue arrow) If the black metal housing has been crushed, the two moving steel walking feet may rub or lock up and not work at all. Test the foot by hand pressing and releasing the slender driving arm. This should result in a smooth waddling walk (like a cat making biscuits :). There are numerous screws holding the Singer Walking Presser Foot together. They must all be intact. The mounting screw is built in. It needs to be straight and rust free. The end of the screw , where it meets and threads into the sewing machine presser bar, need to be clean from old tacky oil and gunk build-up and rust-free. This permanently fitted screw cannot be replaced. The driving arm sits under the needle bar clamp screw and should move freely.(blue arrow) Years ago, I tossed together a small quilt from scraps to demonstrate and test previously sold Singer Walking Presser Feet (quilt not for sale). Unfinished, it still makes a great testing resource. Like my comments? They are included.
