Description: This is the small item you need to be able to listen to Stax electrostatic headphones without paying a million. You simply hook the wires to your speaker amplifier/reciever, and then reconnect your speakers to the fasteners built into the box. Now you can switch between your speakers and your Stax headphones/earspeakers. This particular model is the "SB" version, which refers to "self-biasing" and simply means you don't have to plug this into the wall--it derives its voltage from the music signal itself. It will work with any speaker amplifier of any brand--if your stereo can play speakers, you can listen to Stax. This will work with ANY Stax headphone, but it should be noted that it was designed for the original line of "standard bias" headphones. It gives a bias charge of 230 volts to the drivers, which is a perfect fit for: SRD-1 (super rare), SRD-2 (even rarer!), SRD-3 (easy to find, and inexpensive), SRD-5 (easy to find, and inexpensive, and warm and lovely sound), SR-X any model (easy to find, and inexpensive, and an open and detailed sound), and SR-Lambda standard bias model (to this day, considered one of the best of all Stax headphones, by critics and by me!) Also this will work perfectly with the five budget "electret" models: SR-30 SR-40 SR-50 SR-60 SR-80...these can be found at garage sales and under couches at thrift stores, and they give a taste of the Stax sound, but you shouldn't overpay for any of them. Be patient and see what happens. Finally, and this is the amazing bit, you can also listen to ALL other Stax models as well, i.e. the "Pro Bias" models, with the only caveat that you'll have to raise the volume about 6dB. The standard bias energizers, like this one, provide 230 volts to the drivers, and the later models are looking for 580 volts. So they need more volume from the receiver to play at the same volume level. But it surprised me to discover how well the old energizer handles the Pro headphones--I have it hooked up to an old NAD 3020 (20 watts/channel) and there's more headroom even for the Pro Lambdas than you'll ever need. In other words (and with that caveat) you can also listen to: SR-Lambda Pro and all other later Lambda models, including: Nova, Signature, SR-202, SR-303, SR-404, SR-207, SR-307, SR-407, SR-507, L-300, L-500, L-700, 4040, and a whole bunch I'm not remembering off the top of my head;and even, I suppose, the rarefied models like SR-007 and SR-009 (and the truly odd wonderful Sigma)--although those three really need and deserve a much more powerful amplifier to sound their best. Please feel free to ask questions or advice on this, whether you're here to buy or not--I'm happy to help. Free postage and insurance.
