Guizot, which begins with François the 1st and ends with Henri IV. Two words sum it up: Renaissance and Reform. A curious period marked with the seal of religious fanaticism, and of which all the pages are stained with blood. We have said a word about these pious horrors. Let's not come back to it. As well if the author, in this third volume, evokes many odious figures, he also shows us others which call for themselves and captivate the eye. Among the latter shines in the first line that of Rabelais, this illustrious bohemian who spent two thirds of his life traveling the world, stopping only long enough to write the famous chronicles that we know, and who was not only the most original and eminent writer of the first half of the sixteenth century, but also its most living and truest personification. A rite of her mind, her excessive goodness, her love for poetry, the generous and intelligent protection which she granted, she a Catholic, to the reform. So there is no reason to be surprised at the suspicions of heresy which hovered over her, and, to speak frankly, I do believe that at bottom she was a little heretical. Another thing worthy of note is that in the 16th century, where, as Anquetil says, the women of the court were an object of scandal, Marguerite could pass for a virtue, apart from a few peccadilloes that we have made known the indiscreet muse of Marot, whom she loved, and that gossip of Brantome. The Marguerite of daisies always had a deep affection for her brother which, approaching weakness, sometimes extended even to her mistresses. It was she herself who adorned with mottos the rings given by François to the beautiful Countess of Chateaubriand, who was more queen than Claude-la-Bonne before the battle of Pavia, which did not prevent her, if one thinks Varillas, to die very tragically, the king abandoning her on his return. We have left from the works of the Queen of Navarre seventy-two tales which have been HENRI III AND HIS MIGNONS. Another figure, also tall and particularly sympathetic and interesting, is that of this gracious Queen of Navarre, sister of François I, Marguerite de Valois HERETICS CONDEMNED TO FIRE AND BURNT IN 1546 ON THE GREAT MARKET OF MEXOX. partly pays tribute to his friends; the Mirror of a Sinner; the daisies of the Marguerite des Princesses, pieces collected by Sylvius de la Haie; what laws which had, as Marot said, "a feminine body, a man's heart and an angel's head". But what makes her so much and so far to shine in our eyes, it is the superiority a few mysteries, jokes, a piece of verse on the captivity of her brother, finally the Love Debate which she composed at the age of fifty and which has not been printed. This engraving is 150+ years old. It is the full-page engraving from the French weekly "L'ILLUSTRATION", published in 1873. This is not a modern reproduction. This picture image is on newspaper stock measuring approximately 14" x 10". The picture(s) do not capture all of the detail in the engravings. L'Illustration was a weekly French newspaper published in Paris from 1843 to 1944. It was founded by Edouard Charton and the first issue was published on March 4, 1843. In 1891, L'Illustration became the first French newspaper to publish a photograph. Many of these photographs came from syndicated photo-press agencies like Chusseau-Flaviens, but the publication also employed its own photographers such as Léon Gimpel and others. In 1907, L'Illustration was the first to publish a color photograph. It also published Gaston Leroux' novel Le mystère de la chambre jaune as a serial a year before its 1908 release. During the Second World War, L'Illustration was directed by Jacques de Lesdain, a German collaborator, and it became a voice for propaganda. As a result, it was shut down in 1944 following the Liberation of Paris. Another version re-opened in 1945 under the name France-Illustration, but went bankrupt in 1957. Weekly issues were mailed to subscribers who would have them bound into semi-yearly volumes.
