Description: A new version of an Iroquois beaded strawberry pincushion - a very old traditional form by Paul St John, Mohawk! These new strawberry pincushions are by Mohawk craftsman, Paul St John and have been made in the traditional shape with beaded design using vintage red and very dark green wool with antique glass clear gold heart and clear silver heart seed beads with 3 larger clear gold heart bads at middles of the bottom "dangles". Paul generally uses vintage beads in his work - but recently an elderly aunt gave him boxes of beads that she had used in her work. These included beads that had been her mother's (Paul's grandmother) ... and also beads that had been her grandmother's (Paul's great-grandmother). Some of these beads are well over 125 years old - the silver and gold heart beads are rare - even on vintage pieces. I believe the silver heart beads are at least 100 years old - They add such sparkle! Paul has crafted these strawberry pincushions using the materials and techniques and the designs that his ancestors did to make similar pincushions as long as 140 years ago. Vintage Iroquois strawberry pincushions have been beloved by seamstresses and those who enjoy sewing making this "whimsy" form one of the most popular This strawberry pincushion is 2.25" high from bottom point to top of "hull" where a 1.5" beaded loop attaches. It is 2.25" across at top (widest) - There are 3 bead dangles at bottom point - these are 1.5" long. Paul St. John now lives in Maine, near his mother's Passamaquoddy/Maliseet/Micmac relatives. He is an enrolled Mohawk and grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father's tribe. 2nd from last photo in slideshow is of Paul St John and 2 of his other works. Last photo is of his Mohawk grandmother, Amelia St John who taught him beading. Paul St John also makes birchbark, porcupine and coiled sweetgrass baskets, beaded knife cases, barrettes and moccasins among numerous other traditional crafts - check out more of his work in this ebay store.
