Utagawa Kuniyoshi 1836 Signed Original Woodblock Print Samurai Riding Boar Rare

Description: Samurai Riding a Boar is a diptych by Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) that depicts a Samurai fighting a group of warriors while riding a boar. The Samurai in this scene is Nitta Shiro Tadataka. This item is only the right-hand side of the diptych, and is the more important side since it is the side that shows the Samurai riding the boar! His signature can be found within the peanut-shaped (or gourd-shaped) cartouche at the bottom of the artwork. Very much like an evolving Logo, this particular signature of his matches those of the year 1836. The image measures approx 24cm x 36cm, or 9.5in x 14in. It is in excellent condition for its age. There is some drying and crazing of the paper, as well as minor fading and waffling of the paper. This artwork was acquired at a local estate sale in Yorba Linda, CA. In Japanese woodblock prints, a diptych is two panels of paper placed side by side to create a wider image, or one panel on top of the other to create a longer work. The son of silk dyer, Kuniyoshi Utagawa was born into the Igusa family in Edo. Kuniyoshi began his ukiyo-e career as a pupil of Shunei. At age 14 he was accepted to study the art of woodblock printing under Toyokuni I and, in time, would become one of his most successful students. In 1814, he left Toyokunis studio to pursue a career as an independent ukiyo-e artist. Initially, he had little success, selling tatami mats in order to support himself. However, his fortunes changed in 1827 with his dramatic series 108 Heroes of the Suikoden. From that point forward, the public hungered for his portrayals of famous samurai and legendary heroes. In direct contrast to the peaceful views of a scenic Japan provided by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the following decades saw a rise of the fierce, fearsome and fantastical in ukiyo-e. Kuniyoshi welcomed this changing public taste. He had a ravenous imagination and the full scope of his work reveals an aesthetic sensibility capable of capturing almost any experience. in his time that he received requests for tattoo designs.
