Sarah Byrd Askew (1877-1942) was a prominent librarian and secretary who helped establish county libraries across the United States. On January 1st, 1905, the New Jersey Public Library Commission hired her to travel among New Jersey's libraries to setup a Summer training program and to show these libraries modern library practices at the time. She worked for the New Jersey Public Library Commission for 37 years and would eventually lead it. In 1951 (after her death), Library Journal named Sarah B. Askew to its "Library Hall of Fame", and the New Jersey Library Association awards a yearly scholarship in her honor. We acquired a few years ago a large collection of ephemera/documents from the "Treasurer's File" of the township of Springfield, New Jersey. A majority of these documents from this collection date during the Great Depression (1930s), although there are a few pre and post-Depression documents as well. The main treasurers at the time were William Hoppaugh and Augustus Brodhead Anderson. Some of these documents were stamped "RETURN TO TREASURER'S FILE" either on the front or back. This is a great opportunity to own a piece of local New Jersey history straight from the "Treasurer's File"! Documents from this collection may show signs of staining, damage, creasing, tears, loss, or other imperfections present throughout. Any noticeable or immediate concerning condition issues are listed in the notes and/or shown in the photos. Measures around 8 1/2'' by 9'' inches. -- Shipping -- Items are normally shipped within 3 days of payment (excluding Sundays and any U.S. Holidays).
