He moved in the 1970s to Milano, where he worked with Ettore Sottsass and where he opened his own design and product development studio. In 1981 he was one of the founder members of 'Memphis Group', a postmodern design movement that had a significant impact on the design aesthetics of the eighties. Memphis produced epic, colorful "neo-pop" designs, which became an international sensation in 1981. The products of Memphis had been influenced by various sources and in using stark patterns and crazy shapes to consciously ironise "good taste". The movement popularized the anti-design and took their inspirations for patterns and shapes from stylist directions such as surrealism, kitsch, and computer games. Later, Sowden founded his design studio 'Sowden' and has since worked for many companies around the world, with a preference for working with craft and small industrial organizations.
