Steiff "Lix" & "Lixie" Cats and kittens are among the most popular of Steiff animals made over the past 100 years or so. They come in many sizes and breeds, from realistic tabbies to fanciful dressed characters. Collectors seek out and treasure these Steiff felines as the perfect pet. Two of the most favored felines are Lix and Lixie, a pair of dressed tabby cats made only from 1954 to 1957 and considered very rare. Even with deteriorated rubber hands and boots, this one Lixie is valued at $300. Lixie's fur is grey-tan mohair with black tabby markings on the head. She has green glass eyes, beige felt ears tinged with pink, and a pink floss stitched nose and mouth. The head swivels freely, it’s quite loose- arms and hands are in a fixed position, beautiful silky mohair tail Officially 13 mm tall (5"), Lixie actually measure about 4.5" high. .Lixie, the little girl kitty, wears a green felt vest over a cream-colored cotton blouse, with a black felt cummerbund to accent her red cotton skirt. At her waist, tucked under her right hand, is a light yellow scarf or handkerchief. Completing her outfit are red rubber boots with rust-colored felt pads. "Made in Germany" . The cat's outer covering are 59% wool and 41% cotton. Lixie holds her arms and hands at her side. Condition issues : While the tabby cats' mohair, face details and costumes are in very good condition, the rubber hands and boots are another matter. Rubber becomes brittle and cracks; in its deterioration with age, it also takes on a "melted" appearance. This unfortunate circumstance is common to many of Steiff's character dolls for which rubber was used in the 1950s.The cracked, scuffed and "melted" damage you see in these photos of Lixie is old damage. This is a rare find in any condition. Please see photos and judge for yourself. The arms were made of rubber with a solid wire through the center of the toy. Can not stand in her own due to unevenness of her feet as shown.
