The hinges do work. The lid doesn’t lay extremely straight when looking at the box. Maybe the hinges need tightened.There is writing on the bottom and inside of the lid. It appears the original owner added their name. I think I can make out the name Ruth Backus. This box was purchased at an antique store in West Virginia, my home state, many years ago. I did find a Ruth Backus online from the late 1800s from Mingo County. Not sure if this is the same person.I think this little box is beautiful and a great conversation piece if you like antiques and vintage items like me.Please feel free to email with any questions.
