Description: During the First World War, American soldiers went to Europe sporting the M1911 campaign hat. Americans observed a lighter, more favorable hat being worn by the French, which was soon incorporated into US inventory. During the 1930's the hat was referred to as the "field cap", with a plain version for enlisted men, and a version with branch of service piping for officers. During World War II, the hat was modified again by assigning branch of service piping for enlisted men, and metallic braid for officers. Wonderful example of the World War II "Unassigned" enlisted garrison hat for the winter Class A uniform. The example featured hereis the version without any piping, which would follow the pre-war regulations for enlisted men. During World War II, this hat was worn by enlisted men who were not assigned to a specific branch of service. We often see these on soldiers who had just graduated boot camp, but could have been worn at any point during their service where they where characterized as "unassigned". There is no spec, but there is a faint ink size marking indicating a size "7". It doesn't appear to have had a fraction following the whole number. The hat remains in very good condition, showing signs of age, use and wear. There is no moth damage, but there is a hold at the bottom fro f crease, from where the head rubbed against the forehead. A few areas of mild soiling. Generally good. Please see the pictures for more detail. Guaranteed 100% authentic in every respect for life.
