This also comes with a Dutch laminated wood scabbard. Original M1905 bayonets were made with a 16" blade during WWI. Strategies changed when the WWII rolled around and military advisors required M1905 bayonets to be shortened to 10". When the war began, M1905 bayonets were cut down to the required 10", but as production ramped up, the M1905E1 (cut-down version) was produced at the required 10" and now designated the M1 bayonet. This one is one was originally a 1905 that was cut down. Interestingly, this was cut down even more to 6.5", more like a fighting knife but still functional as a bayonet. During the Cold War, the US provided the Netherlands rifles and bayonets under the Military Assistance Program in 1950 and 1963. Germany made scabbards for Holland out of Durofol (a laminated wood). Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. It has been cut-down. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have scattered light scrapes, but no notable damage. The escutcheon screw securely fastens the two (2) grip panels. The screw slot shows wear. The grips have compressions and drag lines, but most of the serrations are distinct. The spine, sides and fullers have light handling marks and scuffs, but no notable damage. It has been cut down from its original length. The blade appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. Most of the finish has been parkerized and is intact. There are no visible markings. The Dutch plastic scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition. The Webbed belt loop is functional and intact. There are no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. The retaining strap is intact and the snap is functional with some light oxidation. The back leather is securely fastened and the D-Ring has light oxidation. It is all securely attached to the metal mouth of the locket. The locket has oxidation on it and is securely attached to the body. The body has light draglines, but no notable damage. There are no visible markings. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your WWII rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
