A: During World War Two both the Allies and Axis Powers adopted substitutes for many common items in order to maintain their stocks of strategic war materials. Coins were no exception. The Germans, having learned from the Allied naval and economic blockades in WWI, were quick to begin issuing ersatz coinage made of zinc. Pre-war coins made of copper-nickel, bronze and brass, were withdrawn in 1940, melted down, and used for the production of munitions. Silver coins were hoarded. Following Imperial Japan's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the rapid industrial build-up of 1942 left U.S. copper supplies running low. In 1943 the switch to using zinc plated steel in the production of Lincoln cents was made so as to keep America, the Arsenal of Democracy, running at full blast. You will hold history in your hands.
